What is not settled
THE OFFICIAL ENDING IS DEFLATIONARY AND MUST BE STATED. An astronomy team concluded the objects were Jupiter and Venus, refracted and distorted by the extreme high-altitude atmosphere; the negative radar and spectrum results, read at the time as showing the objects were non-metallic, are equally consistent with there being no physical object at all. What survives is valuable as documentary sociology: a real chain of official correspondence, all of it a border-tension artefact.
