What this map is not
It is a map of where the records are, not of where anything happened. France and the United States are dark because both governments preserved their files and published them, and Britain because its National Archives released theirs. A country with no shading has not been quiet; it has been unread, or its archive is closed, or nobody has gone looking yet.
And it is barely a map of forms at all. Of the 52 cases that report an entity, 14 have a record that resolves a body: a face, a head, eyes, hands, proportions. The rest resolve a suit with nothing described inside it, or a silhouette, or nothing whatsoever while a vivid description circulates somewhere else entirely. Filter by The record shows and watch the map empty out. That emptying is the most honest thing on this page.
