ReportedTwo children were minding cattle at the edge of a field in the Cantal when they saw four small dark figures beside a sphere. Their account was consistent, it was taken by the gendarmerie within a day, and it was still consistent when the French official investigation went back over it eleven years later with the witnesses grown up.

What is not settled
Children, and eleven years between the event and the analysis that made it famous. The 1978 study is a serious document but it is an analysis of testimony, not of an object. The figures were described as dark and small in strong sunlight, which is exactly the condition under which a silhouette gives up its detail.
