The record

An official file preserves that a report was made and examined. It does not, by itself, establish what was seen.

UNKNOWN

No document is attached yet. The retrieval is open work.

What is not settled

The decisive fact is documentary: the Grahamstown army regiment that allegedly investigated COULD NOT PRODUCE ANY RECORDS when later asked. Without a docket this stays hearsay-grade. The farm and town also profited commercially from the publicity. Gunfire producing no damage is equally consistent with a light source at distance.
