A NATO air force scrambled two F-16s at a target its own radars said accelerated from 240 to over 1,700 km/h and dropped 900 metres in under two seconds, then published the tapes and said it could not identify what it chased.

What is not settled

Neither pilot got a visual. The radar locks (six of nine, each broken in seconds) have been argued to be ground clutter and artefacts. De Brouwer framed the report as an inability to identify, not a positive finding. Almost no ground-visual corroboration that night.
