United Kingdom · 1990s correspondence; exact incident date unclear

United Kingdom, 1990

Reported

Somewhere in the UK National Archives' released Ministry of Defence files is a letter from a member of the public describing an encounter, with two figures drawn in their own hand. Nobody investigated it. A civil servant filed it, and because it was filed it outlived everyone's memory of it.

What the record resolves

A body

The record carries a face, a head, eyes, skin, hands or proportions.

Two figures drawn by the correspondent. A civilian's own sketch, preserved and never investigated.

The record

An official file preserves that a report was made and examined. It does not, by itself, establish what was seen.

The document is attached to this entry.

What is not settled

This is an archive-only case and it is here to make that category legible. The document is genuine and its content is one person's unexamined account. A file number confers preservation, never corroboration, and the distinction between those two things is the whole reason this archive exists.
