Kelly-Hopkinsville, 1955

Reported

Two families arrived at the Hopkinsville police station near midnight, badly frightened, saying that small silver figures with oversized ears and glowing eyes had been circling their farmhouse for hours and that they had been shooting at them. Police went out with them. The officers found a house shot up from the inside and no figures.

What the record resolves

A body

The record carries a face, a head, eyes, skin, hands or proportions.

Large pointed ears, luminous eyes, claw-like hands. Police attended; the entities were not found.

On that description this archive reads the form as Other morphology. That is a reading of recorded words, not the record classifying itself.

The record

An official file preserves that a report was made and examined. It does not, by itself, establish what was seen.

The document is attached to this entry.

What is not settled

Everything strong about this case is the behaviour of the witnesses, and everything weak about it is that nothing else was ever found. Police attendance is documented; the entities are not. The morphology in circulation today owes a great deal to illustrations drawn afterwards, and separating the drawings from the original statements is work this archive has not finished.
